ABOUT VALERIE

A member of the New York & Connecticut Bars since 1989, Valerie Marvin began her career as a real estate and transactional lawyer in New York City at the law firm of Battle Fowler. In 1995, she opened a solo practice in Greenport, New York, working for one year as Village Attorney to the Village of Greenport, and continues to specialize her legal practice in real estate, land use, and zoning matters on the North Fork, South Fork and Shelter Island.

Since 2006, Valerie has offered mediation and collaborative law services for couples, partnerships and organizations on the east end of Long Island and the greater New York area.

In March 2006, Valerie trained with Jack Himmelstein and Gary Friedman at The Center for Understanding in Conflict/The Center for Mediation in Law where she has since served as a member of their training staff, working to advance knowledge and awareness of mediation and the role of understanding in promoting personal and organizational communication, conflict resolution and decision-making. Valerie has also served as a member of the Suffolk County Supreme Court’s Guardianship & Elder Care Mediation Panel and Commercial Mediation Panel.  Valerie continues to work together with her friend and colleague, Sequoia Stalder & Stalder Mediation, training attorneys, judges, mental health professionals and others in basic and advanced mediation skills.

Valerie’s other trainings include advanced mediation trainings with The Center for Understanding in Conflict; Duke Fisher of Learning Laboratories; divorce mediation training at The Ackerman Institute for the Family; and Office of Court Administration Elder Mediation and Commercial Mediation Trainings.

Valerie is among a growing number of legal professionals who describe themselves as “contemplative lawyers.” Informed by years of yoga and meditation, Valerie has found that her contemplative practices have improved her concentration and creativity, as well as help her to develop clarity, self-awareness and understanding of others. Calling on her contemplative practice, Valerie partners with her clients and other professionals in examining and working through each issue and decision with clarity; helping to discover the possibilities, obstacles and realities of each situation. Valerie brings her skills as a facilitator and her many years of legal experience to each transaction.
